Always been tempted by a fringe but terrified you’ll look more like Velma from Scooby Doo than Marianne in Normal People? We get it; taking the plunge and having a fringe cut in is an intimidating prospect.

Why not break yourself in gently via a trending new hairstyle: the waft fringe?

Katie Allan, Hair Stylist Founder of MAYFIVE Hair, is touting this fringe style as the most flattering haircut for anyone tempted by the allure of a fringe who can’t quite bring themselves to go for a full-on blunt cut.

Katie says that the Farrah Fawcett style waft fringe can be super versatile as it suits most face shapes and can be adjusted to complement your look. “You would flick it out more on the sides if you have an oblong face shape – or if the face is rounder, keep it more elongated,” she explains. “Ask your stylist for advice if you’re not sure which style would suit you best, as they can tailor the fringe to suit your face shape.”

The fringe trend is inspired by the 70s boho trend, which has been dominating the fashion world all year. “Fringes are often a popular choice for autumn/winter when clients are looking to freshen up their look as we adjust our wardrobes and our lifestyle,” explains Katie.

So how do you pull off the look with aplomb? It’s super easy – you just need to make sure you are prepared to style it (and with so much time on our hands right now, there’s never been a better time to trial a new trend). You will need a barrel tong and be able to flick it back off your face and a lot of hairspray to keep it in place. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist for advice when getting a fringe cut in; they can also recommend the best products and tools to use that would suit your hair type.

Katie Ask advises asking your stylist for a fringe that is ‘something between ABBA and Bridget Bardot’. “Bringing pictures to your appointment can also be helpful and the main thing is you need to have length on the edges in order to create the 70s flick.”

Into it.
